In the year 2006, Glynwed Pipe Systems Asia Pte Ltd was selected and awarded by JICS (Japan International Corporation System) to supply and install pipe and equipment in the most affected area caused by the great earthquake of the coast of Sumatra, the Republic of Indonesia, and by the Indian Ocean Tsunami Disaster which included a project to recover the water supply and sanitation system at Aceh province specifically the most affected area in Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar in December 2004. This humanitarian aid was also extended to Nias Island in Sumatra which was affected by the earthquake as well on a separate occasion in March 2005.
This was one of the greatest milestones for Glynwed Asia. We managed to reinstate more than 60% of the water supply network in Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar to achieve the basic needs of domestic potable water usage of the people in this province in Indonesia after the disaster. The total contract value was USD6million for the supply and installation of approximately 700 tonnes of polyethylene pipes plus fittings and other fixtures. The project took 1-1/2 years to complete and we handed over the distribution piping to the water authorities at the end of 2007.
Glynwed Asia is proud to have been a part of this fundamental aspect of getting water to the affected areas in order for the people to continue with their lives. It showed our strength in dealing with complex projects and our huge desire to get the correct plastic piping to be used for the right applications. Almost 95% of the products used were imported into the Republic of Indonesia using high quality materials within the Aliaxis Group.
We are very positive that these piping system will be in use for many years to come and the quality of life in these areas have improved significantly because we cared. |
